A Lighthouse in Maine Shines with a Tree Classics Christmas Tree

Tree Classics has extended the spirit of Christmas in July to the coastline of Maine by donating a brand new 7.5-foot Grand Fir Christmas Tree to the Parks and Recreation Department of York. The tree is displayed outside the Cape Neddick Lighthouse, which is fondly referred to by locals as the Nubble Light. The evergreen comes decorated with our very own Champagne Ornaments for a total value of $1,228.

The Grand Fir Christmas Tree was raffled off during York Days 2014 in an effort to raise additional funds for the Nubble Light. Raffle tickets were made available in the Nubble Light Gift Shop for $5 per five tickets. All proceeds go to the fund dedicated to the maintenance of the historic Nubble Light, which has been in use since 1879.

The evergreen was displayed fully decorated on the coastline. Tourists and locals had a chance to marvel at the spectacle. The tree was then moved to the gift shop on August 1, and transferred over the weekend to the craft fair in York, a popular summer destination. It remained on display at the fair until August 3.

How to Plan a Classy New Year’s Party

There’s no better way to say farewell to the year that was and celebrate the arrival of a new one than with the company of family and friends. On December 31, pay tribute to endings and welcome new beginnings by having a marvelous and classy New Year’s Eve party. Here’s a quick guide on how to throw a memorable year-end celebration:

Send Out Invitations

a New Year's party with family and friends

Send out invitations to friends, family, and neighbors at least three days before the celebration. Give them the location and time that the cocktail party begins (at 10pm preferably). Invite them to come in their most posh and dapper outfits. After all, it’s only right to welcome the New Year in style.

Choose the Perfect Location

The foyer and living room are the perfect venues for this kind of party. If you live in the warmer states, you can also have it in the garden or in your terrace so people can watch fireworks displays. Don’t forget to place cocktail tables and decorate your space with light strings to make the area more captivating. Set up a mini-bar and stock it with wine, champagne, and other hard liquor. Fancy cocktails, like martinis, tequila sunrises, Napa sours, and mimosas are also ideal for this occasion. For some New Year cocktail inspirations, check out Mix that Drink and Saveur.

Serve Delicious Party Snacks

a delicious serving of nachos

Most of your guests have probably had dinner around this time, but it’s still important to serve some yummy food choices in case anyone gets hungry. This is especially needed if you plan to have a party until the wee hours of the morning.

Traditional party food works! Try these fried mozzarella cheese sticks from Copykat, breadcrumb stuffed mushroom from Laura in the Kitchen, or these delicious Baltimore crab cakes from Epicurious. Serve loaded nachos from The Pioneer Woman or these delicious Pigs in a Blanket from Just a Pinch.  Put out bowls of chips, salted pretzels, and various dips so that everyone has something to munch on while waiting for midnight.

Keep the Cocktails Flowing and Turn Up the Music

Make sure that everyone has a drink and is having a good time. Talk to all your friends and introduce people to each other. Play some celebratory music to provide an exciting atmosphere for the occasion. You can also create your very own party playlist before the festivities begin.

Welcome the New Year Together

a beautiful fireworks display

Two minutes before midnight, call everyone’s attention and announce that you are only moments away from the New Year. Start a countdown 20 seconds before the clock hits twelve. Welcome the New Year together and party until the morning.

Have a blast this New Year’s Eve with this party planning guide from Tree Classics.

Heartwarming Christmas Tree Traditions

Christmas has always been a time for cherishing family traditions and building memories around the Christmas tree. Here are some traditions that have stood the test of time.

old-2066_640The holidays are always the most opportune time for the family to bond and instill new traditions. As the years pass, simple family customs are cemented into our lives – and those who once established such traditions begin to hold a special place in our collective memory. Here are a few Christmas tree traditions with heartwarming beginnings.

The Wessler Christmas Tree

While stationed in Guayaquil, Ecuador in 1963, Bob Wessler, his wife Anne and sons Tony and Jim wanted to honor the holiday tradition of decorating a Christmas tree in their home. But the lack of traditional evergreens in Ecuador at that time made it nearly impossible to set one up. Since Ann Wessler did not want to adopt the local custom of attaching painted sticks to a base, she decided to have an artificial tree sent to their home.

After 49 years, this same tree still stands strong and has now been adopted by Tony and his wife Beth. They have been continuing the tradition of decorating this family treasure. In 2012, the couple decided to share this tradition with their community by putting the tree up in their office in Sullivan, Montana.

The Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree

When you talk about Christmas trees immersed in tradition, you can be sure the Rockefeller Christmas tree is among them. First displayed during the Great Depression, the Rockefeller Christmas tree was once just a small, unadorned tree set up by construction workers.

In 1933, the tree was replaced with a lighted one, and it has since become grander each year. More than 80 years later, the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree remains an icon of New York City.

The Oldest Christmas Tree

Do you have a family heirloom that has been passed on from generation to generation? For the Parker family, one of their greatest treasures is their 126-year-old Christmas tree. Measuring only 14 inches tall and bought in 1886 for a mere sixpence, this diminutive masterpiece has been confirmed by the Guinness Book of World Records to be the oldest known artificial Christmas tree in the world. It now has a value of £1,000 or about $1,500.

For Paul Parker, the third generation owner of this incredible tree, the miniature ornamental Christmas tree is priceless.

Family traditions truly leave an imprint on our individual lives, and Christmas is the perfect season for strengthening these bonds. For one family, Christmas traditions may involve prepping the tree and the family feast. For another, it may be the opening of gifts on Christmas morning. One thing is for certain: time-honored family traditions live on.

We would love to hear from you. What are the Christmas traditions of your family?

Christmas Tree Decorating Ideas: Silver and Gold Ornaments

There are timeless Christmas tree decorating ideas that never go out of style, match other yuletide décor beautifully, and constantly provide a regal appearance that’s perfect for the season: gold and silver decorations. Here are several inspiring gold and silver choices that are perfect for your Christmas tree:

Silver Christmas Decorations

glimmering silver christmas balls for your tree

Silver Christmas balls instantly add a touch of sophistication to your tree. The contrast between the lively evergreens and the sleek and shimmering ornaments creates a dazzling spectacle that conveys elegance in any space. Guests and loved ones will look at your tree for a few seconds just to bask in its beauty. Mix up the ornaments. Get solid ones and striped ones. This will create a contrast that will add more character to your centerpiece.

delightful snowflake ornaments for your tree

Silver snowflakes are another type of adornment that you can hang on branches. These ornaments bring the unique look of a wintry landscape. The color carries a touch of serenity to your room while the geometric design adds grace and versatility to your space.  Pair these with pine cones and leaves to take full advantage of the season’s wintry charm.

refined elegant antique ornaments

Antique pieces are also excellent choices. These small items with their traditional but timeless shapes and forms add an Old World flair to spaces. They are perfect for houses with classic themes and even rustic, cabin-like undertones. These are particularly lovely with white clear lights that accentuate their physical appearance.

Finally, a great finishing touch is to use a silver snowflake tree topper. This tree topper is a superb alternative to traditional star-shaped ornaments. At the same, it’s also a great way to capture the appeal of other silver accents in your room.

Gold Christmas Decorations

The color gold has the distinctive quality of inspiring deep sentiment while conveying a regal mood. Gold Christmas balls deliver this precious appeal effortlessly. What’s particularly great about these items is that they go well with both evergreens and white Christmas trees.

Gold can also be used to give your tree an air of mysticism. Pairing gold lights with a deep green Christmas tree creates an enchanting vision that reminds people of evergreens surrounded by dozens of beautiful fireflies. This enthralling look is especially more delightful at night, when the gold lights shine bright, filling your space with a magical air.

good ribbons, gold balls and gold ornaments are perfect for the season

Gold is also one of those colors that just becomes so much more beautiful when it’s paired with similarly colored items. Traditional artificial Christmas trees, like the one in the image, benefit from a combination of gold-colored balls, leaves, flowers, and even gold iridescent lights. A bountiful display such as this fills homes with a royal and lavish appeal that’s synonymous with the season.

Of course, nothing says Christmas like a gorgeous star tree topper. An impeccable addition to any holiday décor, this piece is a powerful statement about the special and festive meaning of the season. This is the perfect crown for any type of Christmas tree.

Different Types of Christmas Trees: Full, Narrow, Slim and Flatback Trees

Tree Classics features four of the most common Christmas tree shapes to help you in choosing an artificial Christmas tree that is right for you!

Artificial Christmas trees today take on a variety of shapes or profiles in order to meet the needs of every household. With these beautifully crafted trees, different homes – no matter how big or small the space, no matter the style – are imparted with the spirit of Christmas through the heartwarming presence of these evergreens.

The Full Tree

Full trees are the most popular of all because they resemble real Christmas trees pretty closely. Featuring lush foliage and a broad profile, full trees are perfect for cheering up the mood in your home with their regal charm and abundance.

How to Decorate a Full Christmas Tree

The commanding presence of a full Christmas tree invites you to give it an adorable embellishment, simply because it is something that the whole family will enjoy looking at throughout the holidays. Full trees can be decorated with almost anything – from tinsel garlands and shiny baubles to ribbons and knitted stocking ornaments. Different combinations and placements of holiday trimmings give the tree a unique appeal.

The Narrow Tree

Narrow Christmas trees are perfect for spreading holiday warmth and cheer in smaller homes and apartments. These fairly traditional full-height yet slender trees also work well as a secondary holiday centerpiece that you can have in your dining room, kitchen, or guest room.

How to Decorate a Narrow Christmas Tree

Lending an air of elegance, narrow Christmas trees look even sleeker when decorated with restraint. To add visual interest without being overpowering, combine baubles, icicles, and trimmings in a monochromatic color scheme.

On the other hand, if you want your tree to appear fuller, consider featuring different textures that create volume and depth. Large baubles and bows, mixed with pinecones and poinsettias, can give a sense of breadth and create the feeling of abundance as a full tree would.

The Slim Tree

For homes that have minimal space, beautiful and verdant slim trees are the ideal way to usher in the holiday season. With lean silhouettes, these trees can fit in even in the tightest spaces, giving your entryways, foyers, and corners an instant dose of Christmas cheer.

How to Decorate a Slim Christmas Tree

The old adage ‘less is more’ is a good rule to follow when it comes to slim Christmas trees. Skinny trees command attention due to their delicate profile, and it’s best to showcase this feature by keeping the ornaments minimal.

Skinny trees give the illusion of height, which is why they work well in small rooms. Emphasize this admirable attribute by using ribbons that cascade from the top to bottom. Hang the smaller ornaments on the upper part of the tree and the bigger ones at the lower section to create a sense of balance.

The Flatback Tree

Flatback trees radiate the holiday ambiance of a traditional Christmas tree but takes up only half the floor space. Great for studios and small apartments, these trees feature a space-saving design that allows them to rest comfortably against the wall while providing a lush full-tree effect from the front.

How to Decorate a Flatback or Half Christmas Tree

Because a flatback tree poses as a full-bodied tree, it is spruced up much like a lush evergreen, except that you get to skip the back corner. Depending on your room’s décor, you can choose a festive red-and-green theme or go beyond the traditional Christmas colors.

A neutral scheme using natural elements, such as pinecones and other woodsy ornaments, is a great way to infuse a feeling of coziness and warmth in your holiday celebrations. Add a joyful spirit by placing neatly wrapped presents under the tree.

With the wide selection available on the market, choosing an artificial Christmas tree can be difficult. We hope this Tree Classics feature has helped you in buying a Christmas tree that’s perfect for your holiday home.
