The holiday season is long gone. Your decorations are packed into the closet, greenery is tucked into a Christmas tree storage bag, and life is returning to normal after the rush and bustle of the holidays. Suddenly it’s spring cleaning time, but… there’s so much to do! Where do you start?
Here are a few tips and tricks to make this year’s spring cleaning easier–and more time-efficient–than ever.
1. Start with the closets
Closets tend to collect all the stuff that doesn’t seem to belong anywhere else in the house. Take this opportunity to go through the holiday decorations that ended up unceremoniously shoved onto closet shelves. Make sure your pre-lit Christmas tree is in a storage back and sealed away from dust and contaminants.
Go through your clothes and make a trip to Goodwill with items you no longer wear. By the time you’re through with your closets, the biggest portion of sorting will be over and you’ll be able to move on to more visible spring-cleaning projects.
2. Clean the windows
Clean windows let in more light and make a house seem brighter and more sunny faster than any other cleaning task. Tackling the inside and outside of your home’s windows, as well as the surrounding trim, will make a difference in the look and feel of your home.
3. Wash your blinds
Wooden blinds can be wiped down with dry rag, then with a drop or two of gentle wood cleaner. Aluminum blinds are a little more tricky, and often more difficult to clean. Try taking them outside and placing them on an old sheet or dropcloth, then spray them off and apply a soft rag. Make sure you dry the blinds thoroughly to prevent rust afterwards.
4. Clean light fixtures
Another way to make your home look and feel brighter is to take down the glass light fixtures in each room of your home and give them a thorough washing. Dusting the light bulbs while you’re at it will allow the light to shine brighter and give you more bang for your electricity buck.
5. Update bed linens
There’s nothing like updating your bed linens to make a bedroom feel fresh and new. Whether you purchase new linens and a duvet cover or pull an old comforter out of the attic to wash out and update your room, the fresh, clean feeling will be unmistakable.
Spring cleaning can seem like a huge hassle, but by starting with the little things, you’ll see big differences in each room of your home. Your family (and guests) will notice the difference!
