We all love how ornaments make our Christmas trees merry and bright. But with so many options out there, it can be hard to decide what decorations to use and how to hang them. Here’s our step-by-step guide on how to decorate a Christmas tree with ornaments.
1. Choose a Theme and Stick to It
Following a decorating theme helps you pick the right ornaments to use for a unified look. Take a cue from your room’s color scheme, or try popular themes such as:
- Monochromatic – Mix and match ornaments of the same color, and play with various shapes, sizes, and textures.
- Technicolor – Brighten up any tree with bold hues, oversized ornaments, and color-changing lights.
- Rustic – Use neutral hues and nature-inspired elements like animal figures and acorns.
- DIY – Celebrate family with handmade paper garlands, photos, and personalized ornaments.

2. Prepare Your Christmas Tree

Pick the best spot for your tree, so you won’t have to move it later. This spares you from having to redo your decorations or breaking glass ornaments. If you have a pre-lit tree, check that all lights work and tree branches are properly fluffed.
3. Hang Ribbons on Your Tree

Whether plain or patterned, ribbons add color and drama to your tree. We suggest you hang these first to avoid knocking ornaments off the branches. Begin at the top and loosely wind ribbon around your tree in a downward spiral, or let it drape down in sections for a cascading look. To learn more, watch our tutorial here.
Garlands are another way to spruce up your display. Tinsel garlands create instant shine, while faux crystal strands give a hint of elegance. For a rustic theme, hang wooden bead garlands on tree branches.
4. Create a Colorful Base with Christmas Balls
As a rule of thumb, you’ll need 10 to 12 ornaments per foot for light coverage. Add more for a fuller look, or keep it simple with minimal pieces. To easily mix and match different ornaments, opt for themed collections that feature assorted Christmas balls, finials, and accent pieces.
Start with plain balls, and scatter them evenly throughout your tree. For more depth, place large pieces closer to the trunk.
5. Showcase Special Ornaments

Heirlooms and homemade ornaments have a special place in our hearts—and on our tree, too. Check how your Christmas lights make them shine, then adjust their placement if needed. To keep fragile accents safe, hang them on higher branches out of children’s reach.

6. Add Picks to Your Tree

Versatile and easy to use, Christmas picks give your tree extra texture and shimmer. Tuck floral stems, berry sprays, or glittery leaves into the branches as a nice finishing touch.
Let your creativity be your guide as you dress up your Christmas tree. Why not get the whole family involved and make it a party? It’s a great way to make memories together this holiday season. Happy decorating!
